Madison Lawyers for Bike Injuries
The Wisconsin community boasts a proud cycling tradition. Home to top-of-the-line cycling manufacturers, nationally recognized trails and competitions, Wisconsin has plenty to offer for bicycling enthusiasts and amateurs alike. Yet, like many outdoor activities, safety concerns are paramount. For both cycling enthusiasts and casual bike-riders, the dangers of the roadway are not to be underestimated.
Sharing space with motor vehicles can be dangerous. According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (“WisDOT”), between 2011 and 2013 Wisconsin averaged just over 1,100 bicycle crashes each year. The reasons for these collisions run the gamut, taking place everywhere from rural thoroughfares to arterial roadways. Alarmingly, the vast majority of these collisions did not involve complicated maneuvering by motor vehicles – 79% of bicycle collisions involved a motor vehicle simply traveling straight. Given the potential for disaster in innocuous situations, it is important that cyclists and the operators of motor vehicles understand the associated risks, and act to accommodate for them.
How can these collisions be prevented? In a 2015 report, WisDOT compiled data on bicycle collisions in Wisconsin and developed a set of recommendations on how to address the problem. The report recommends improvement of the “Four E’s” - better Engineering, better Education, better Enforcement, and constant Evaluation. Some of WisDOT’s specific suggestions are simple, such as improving lighting on roadways. While other suggestions, such as re-engineering roadways to limit crossing distances, will take considerably more effort. In any event, there is always more to be done.
Yet, even after taking all the necessary precautions, the roadway will always pose risks to Wisconsin cyclists. In the event of a collision, it’s important to know your rights. This is where our Madison bike injury lawyers can help.
